A herringbone gear is a combination of double helical gears, with two helices arranged on the opposite side of the hand. It is a type of large gear commonly used in heavy industrial applications, such as in powertrains, Marine propulsion systems and mining equipmentThe teeth of the herringbone gear are arranged at an Angle called the helix Angle, there is no gap between the left and right helix, and appear in the shape of the letter "V". Since this structure has more than two teeth meshing with each other at the same time, this advantage is that the power transmission is smooth.

The inclined teeth of a herringbone gear help to generate axial force and heat, and the axial force is proportional to the size of the helix tangent. The Angle between the spiral and the axis of rotation is 45 degrees; however, a larger spiral Angle provides a higher speed. The setup of the two teeth of the hermit-gear counteracts the thrust exerted on each other, giving it the advantage of smooth operation even at higher speeds.
